Shook Design Group
April 1995 – May 1997 Charlotte, North Carolina Area
After 10 years in the design department at Odell Associates I needed to get more experience with all aspects of Architecture. Shook Design Group was selected to design 50% of the the Harris Teeter Grocery Stores. I was hired to be Project Architect for two stores to be constructed in Atlanta Georgia. Working with Kevin O"Donnell, Stan Rostas and Kevin Kennedy we were able to create two truly unique retail experience.
My roll was to design, create the construction documents, construction administration and oversee the store opening. On the night before the Mechants Exchange store was to open I was on a ladder adjusting the spot lights over the produce.
Odell Associates - First Time
April 1985 – April 1995 Charlotte, North Carolina Area
Was hired to to join the design team lead by Marley Carroll and Mile Woollen for the Charlotte Coliseum on Tyvola Road. Over the next 10 years Marley and I would design Arenas, Office Buildings, Labs and Hospitals.
The summer before my 5th year in Architecture School I learned to draw with a early computer software called Intergraph (a Unix main frame system). Odell had four workstation that had three shifts of CAD operators. I was the first Architect in Charlotte to actually draw with the computer. We quickly saw that we could use the computer to solve the large geometry and sight line issues found in Arena design. I taught my self to do 3D modelling and soon we were designing all of our arenas in 3D.
When NC State was going to build a new arena next to Carter Finley Stadium, Marley and I met with Jim Valvono about the design. He wanted to make the new 20,000 seat arena as opposing as the field house they were playing in. His request was to allow the alumni to stay seated and still see over the heads of the standing students around the court. We were able to show him the sight lines from different spots around the arena. (this was 1988)
